Strong arms wrapped around my stomach, and yanked me off my feet. Hands patted my face and a wadded up napkin soaked in some mysterious liquid was wiped over my face. My glasses fell off, and before I could reach for them the man turned around keeping me from them. He smelled like cigarettes and the woman’s eyes were filled with tears as she thrust my glasses back onto my face.
“Gabriel?” She brushed my hair out of my eyes as the man rushed with me to a waiting car. People were coming out of the building, all of them running toward something I couldn’t see. “Sweetie, mommy has some cookies for you in the car.”
“Mommy?” I blinked. The sun was so bright it was hurting my eyes. “You’re not my mommy.”
“She’s your mommy, kid.” The man shoved me into the backseat. Inside the car was too hot. My breath caught in my chest, and there was too much smoke clinging to everything.
“And this is your daddy, Gabriel.” The lady, my mommy, handed me a plastic bag stuffed with chocolate chip cookies. The chocolate was melted and stuck all over my fingers. “We are going to take good care of you.”
The man grunted as he climbed into the car. He glared at me through the mirror as he lit a cigarette. His eyes were cold. It made me shiver. “Now shut up and go to sleep. I don’t want to deal with some puking kid on the way back to Queens.”
“Oh, Gabriel.” Mommy leaned over the seat, handing me more cookies, and a bunch of comic books. “We’re going to have so much fun. We’ll go to the zoo, and you’ll go to school. You’ll love school. You’re so smart. You’ll be mommy’s very special boy, won’t you?”
It was too hot in the car. The cookies sat in my belly. I tried reading, but it made me feel green. “I need to potty.”
“You’re going to have to hold it.” Daddy didn’t look at me when he said it. He didn’t like me either. “It’s a long way to the next gas station, and if you pee your pants, I’ll make sure you never forget it. Got me?”
“Yes, sir.” I shrank into the seat behind my mommy. Clutching my belly and curled up to sleep. He scared me. I wasn’t going to have an accident. Not now. Not ever. “I’ll be good.”
“Help me carry him.” I woke with a start, mommy’s hands under my arm while she tried to lift me. “He’s heavy.”
“You wanted the kid. You carry him.” The car door slammed, and I heard my daddy walk away.
“It’s okay, Mommy,” I said, waking up enough to walk myself. I had to pee so bad it hurt, but I would be good. I clung to her side, as she helped me get to the bathroom. Tears were running down my face as she shut the door behind me.
I stayed there, huddled in the stall until my father pounded on the door. “Hurry up. We’re going. If you’re not out here by the time I count to ten, we’re leaving without you. Now get your ass in gear, Gabriel.”
Mommy grabbed me when I came out of the bathroom. Her hands were shaking, and she bent over to kiss my face. “There’s mommy’s special boy. Are you hungry? We’ll get you a sandwich and then we’ll get back on the road.”
“Mommy,” I said quietly as we slid into the booth of the restaurant. “Why is daddy mad at us?”
“He’s always mad, sweetheart. It’s just his way.” She picked up the bottle of ketchup and tilted it over my French fries. The bottle was plugged, and she had to hit the bottom to get it open. Thick red goop flew out of it, pouring onto my plate. I jumped back and saw a splash of it hit her face.
“Mommy!”
I was still crying when he shoved me into the backseat of the car. Crying until I fell asleep.
