Notes: Follow up to I'm the Hero.
Waking up was the last thing I expected. I kept my eyes closed as awareness crept through the fog that I’d been shrouded in. I knew that it had been three days since I gave up my life to save New York, but I always know what time it is. It’s part of my intuitive aptitude, and the reason I can walk around with a broken watch and still be on time. I have the greatest internal clock on the planet lucky me.
I could hear people murmuring around me, but no one was in the room with me. I tried to focus to get more details without letting anyone know I was awake, but I felt like I was wrapped in bubble wrap. When I moved my hand I was surprised that I wasn’t strapped down to the bed. I wasn’t a prisoner, or I was in such bad shape that they saw no reason to restrain me. The latter was probably the case.
“He’s awake,” That was Peter. He’d lived as well not a surprise. He could come back from anything as far as I knew. God knew I’d pondered the options to kill the little shit permanently if only to know what would end me once I got Claire’s power. That’s right, I saved the fucking world, and I was still planning to rip the Cheerleader’s skull open. My bad.
“How do you know?” That was a voice I didn’t know. It was rich and deep, and there was something familiar about it. Primatech, I’d heard it when they had me locked up before.
“I heard the change in his heartbeat and breathing.” I could picture Peter tapping his ears and smiling like a dork that he had yet another of my powers. “He’s probably listening to us too.”
“He will not be able to. I am blocking his powers.” Blocking my powers, he is going on my list too. I wanted that, and he wasn’t blocking them well if I could hear them.
“So, that’s who you are,” I said, as I finally opened my eyes. It wasn’t as bright in the hospital room as I expected, but after being out for three days any light hurt my eyes. A hospital room was a hell of a lot better than waking up in another cinderblock cell and it would explain why I smelled bleach and disinfectant instead of mold, piss and puke.
“Nice trick, I thought you couldn’t talk?” This time my voice was stronger, as I took a look at my surroundings. My body was stiff and ached as I shifted and scooted around until I could sit up a bit. It was a clean sterile room with a big window that Peter and the Haitian were looking at me through. It was more than likely reinforced like the window in my cell had been, not that, that had stopped me from dragging Eden through it.
“Nice to see you awake, Sylar,” Peter said, stepping away from the big black man to come into the room. He looked the same as he did every other time I’d seen him, minus the blood splatter that I always thought was a nice addition, down to the emo haircut.
“Whatever.” I managed to find the controls to the bed and raised the back of it, so I could lay back a bit. “I’d ask why I hurt so much, but considering the last time I saw that son of a bitch I was being tortured, I won’t bother.”
“You haven’t been tortured,” Peter said with a sigh as he pulled a chair next to the bed. “You’re not a prisoner either. You can leave as soon as you’re up to it.”
“They would never let me leave here, not after all that I’ve done.” Fear shot through me like lightning. There’s only one way they’d let me go. “You took my powers didn’t you? That’s why I can go.”
“No, I wouldn’t,” he paused and glanced over at the Haitian who was standing guard. He was so still that all he needed was the Beefeater to fit in at Buckingham Palace. “I wouldn’t let them do that to you, not when you’re the only one who can stop me if I lose control again.”
“You wouldn’t let them.” I narrowed my eyes not believing what he was telling me at all. “What do you mean you wouldn’t let them? Can they do that to me?”
“They can, or at least they told me they could.” Peter scrubbed at his face, and he looked so sad when he looked at me. He’d been hurt or something. Someone had slapped him in the face with reality or maybe nearly blowing up had been a wake up call for the moron. “I didn’t ask for details. Rene’s blocking you now, but that was because they’re afraid of you.”
“But you’re not, are you?” I twisted on the bed, so I could look him in the eyes. For the first time when looking at me there was no fear in them. I wasn’t sure what I was seeing. It might have been acceptance. It might have been a lot of shit that I didn’t understand, but it wasn’t anger or hate. I knew what that looked like. I saw it when I looked in the mirror often enough, or in other peoples’ eyes when they realized what I was.
“Not anymore, no.” He got up and brought me a glass of water and placed it into my hand before I knew that I was thirsty. “I made a deal with them that’ll be good for us both, Sylar, and I think you’ll agree to it too.”
“I don’t make deals, Peter.” I took the water and sipped at it carefully, taking it slow since my stomach was empty. “Why would I want to?”
“Because of what we learned at Kirby Plaza, for some fucked up reason you’re the only one who can stop me, and I’m the only one who can stop you. Seems to me that means you and I need to work something out.” He made it sound so reasonable, but I still didn’t like it.
“Look,” I said with a sneer as I reached for my abilities. They were still there, and some of them were active. So Rene wasn’t as powerful as he thought. Good, it meant I could get away if I had to. “Much as I like you, which I don’t, the last thing I want to do is be your new best friend. I’ve got places to go, people to kill.”
“No, you look.” Peter got up and stood over me. “You owe me. I healed you. You want to know what I had to do to bring you back after you froze?”
“What do you mean you healed me?” I looked down at my hands and wiggled my toes under the blankets, fully expecting them not to work or for a finger to be missing. Then I reached up to touch my face, but it felt normal too right down to the beard that had grown in while I was out.
“I have healing from someone.”
“But you don’t know who, right?”
“No, I know where it came from.”
“For a change.”
“Yeah, for a change, but that doesn’t fucking matter. If you want to keep your abilities, you’ve got to take this deal.” He was dead set on it. There was stubborn tightness in his jaw when he walked over to stand between me and the window, so that Rene couldn’t see me. “If you don’t, they’ll take your powers.”
“Who are they, Bennet? I don’t care about him.”
“You should care about him, Gabriel.” Peter and I were startled by the sound of a woman’s voice. Peter nodded his head at her and then kissed her cheek. Her dark hair framed her face, and she touched a simple pearl necklace with well manicured nails. “Noah Bennet wants me to let him put a bullet in your brain for what you’ve done.”
“This is my mother, Angela Petrelli.” Peter shrank in on himself, letting her run the show. “My family, Sylar, my family runs this place, and they’ll put you down. I don’t want them to. I need you to teach me control. Please, I don’t want to fuck up again.”
“I don’t care if you lose control. Go ahead!” I snapped at him, throwing the blankets off only to find out I was wearing hospital gown and nothing else, so much for getting out of the bed, and beating Peter to dead with a bedpan. “Kill us all.”
“You do care, Gabriel,” Angela said as she stepped next to the bed, and brought the blankets back up over me. “Or you would have let Peter blow up. Now be a good boy, work with my son, and you’ll find out that the Company can be very rewarding.”
“There’s only one reward I want, Angela,” I said, trying to see just what I could get out of here. I leaned back into the pillow and folded my hands behind my head, giving her a smile with too many teeth. “There’s this Cheerleader, and I want her power.”
“Peter told me that would be your price, but I’m afraid I can’t let you have my granddaughter.” She pursed her lips and glanced over at her son, and then back at me. “But Claire’s not the only special with her ability. There’s another, and none of us would have a problem if you took regeneration from him. So do we have a deal, Gabriel? Will you teach Peter?”
