Hedge Maze Picture

He was giggling. I could see the heels of his sneakers as he dashed around the corner of the maze, the untied laces catching on dead leaves as Sylar slipped away. I got up on one knee, panting, my glasses were covered in dirt from where I’d face planted. The ground was cool and most, no real sunlight ever warmed this part of the hedge maze.

“Wait for me, Sylar!” I shouted, scrambling to get both my feet under me. I didn’t want to be alone. It was going to be dark soon, and we couldn’t find our way out. None of the tricks I knew from my books was working. I tried following the left all the way through, but all I did was get lost deeper and deeper.

Please don’t leave me. I was scared. My heart was hammering in my chest.

“Where are you?” I darted around the edge where I’d just seen him go, and he wasn’t there.

“Over here! Gabriel! I’m over here!” I heard him calling me, and turned around to find the passage I’d just come down was now a blank wall. The maze was shifting, twisting and warping as I ran. It was like something out of one of my books, and I didn’t know what to do.

“I’m lost!” I screamed it this time. Tears were running down my face, steaming up my glasses. My hand was bleeding from my fall, and I knew that it was going to get infected if I didn’t wash it soon. “Sylar! Come back!”

“He’s over here!” It was his voice. The man who was chasing me. He was going to hurt me. He was going to hurt Sylar. We had to run. We had to get free.

Which he? Had he seen me? I pressed my back against the bush, the sharp twigs digging into my flesh, snagging on my hoodie. I bit back a scream, as I was yanked through the wall. A hand clamped over my mouth, and Sylar hissed in my ear for me to be quiet.

“I found the way out, Gabriel.” When I stopped squirming he let me go, and laced his fingers with mine. “We’ll be safe. OK?”

“Hurry. They’re coming. I can hear them. I can feel them coming for us, Sylar.” I raced besides him, losing track of how many rights and lefts we took. It felt like we were running for miles, and my legs were turning to water. I was so tired. I couldn’t stop crying, but the wind made the tears dry on my face.

“Don’t worry, Gabriel.” He tugged me toward a white gate. It was the way out. We were going to be safe. “I’ll take care of you.”

“Promise?” I yelped as a branch snapped behind us. He found us. He was coming now. I could smell the cloying stink of old cigarettes on him and hear his ragged breath.

“I promise. We’re in this together.” His eyes locked with mine, dark as night, and I knew I’d be safe as long as we were together.
