Chapter: 5/7

Grey

I’d been playing the good boy for so long that I was starting to worry that I was turning into the mask. But the more Dr. Scully told me about her son, the more I knew I had to meet him. Even more than that, I knew that I had to save him. I couldn’t let them put a chip in his head like they did to me. William might not be able to reprogram it the way that I had. I couldn’t allow that.

Of course I still had no idea how powerful little William might be, but today was the day. Scully was going to take me outside. She was going to let me meet her son. Someone normal would have been thrilled to be going outside after living underground for six months of rehabilitation. But I haven’t been normal in a very long time.

Standing in front of the mirror in my room, I ran my razor over my jaw. I’d have preferred a straight blade, but there was no way my keepers would allow me to have one of those. So there was still a shadow of my beard no matter how hard I tried using the dull plastic disposable. As I washed off my face in the sink, I smiled at my reflection.

“You look happy Gabriel,” Scully said from behind me as she came through the door. She was dressed for the outside world too, no lab coat or scrubs today. She really was very pretty, probably more so because she didn’t try to be.

“Shouldn’t I be?” I felt a surge of panic. “Did they change their mind? Aren’t we going out?”

“No, no we’re going out.” She placed her hands on my arm to offer me her reassurance. There was no sexual tension between us. But I’d been doing my best to convince her that I was her friend. “I wouldn’t let them do something like that to you. You’ve worked so hard. I just wish…”

“I know,” I smiled down at her. “I wish I didn’t have to come back too. But it’ll be good to see the sky. Maybe if I’m good they’ll let me go out again soon.”

The ride in the elevator up to the surface seemed to take days. I could taste the warmth of the sun on my tongue growing stronger with each inch we rose. Four well muscled guards flanked Scully and I. They were all different. Three of them were so much stronger than a normal human. I didn’t know what the fourth guard could do, but then I’d never tested that one.

“You’ll need these.” Scully slid a pair of sunglasses into my hands.

“Thank you Dana,” I said as I put them on. I closed my eyes until I felt the fresh air hit my face after the long walk across the lobby. Opening them slowly, I took my first look at the new world. Sadly the sky was overcast and gray. “Well at least it’s not raining.”

Chapter: 4/7

Tangerine

Weeks had passed. I had to dig under my hair to find the outline of the scar on my scalp from my surgery. Beneath it, I could hear the hum of the circuits in the chip they had placed within my brain. I was glad it was noisy. If it had been silent, I might never have figured out how to manipulate it and change it to suit my needs. I’d had to be so very careful to make sure the signals the Company computers sent it were still received and that the signals that it sent out all went where they were supposed to go. But I’d been able to override its programming.

That was why I’d agreed to the procedure to begin with, not that I’d really had a choice. I knew that no matter what Dr. Scully said that they’d kill me if I didn’t go along with their experiment. I wasn’t the first to be chipped, but I had no doubt I was the most dangerous. I also had no doubt that I was the only one of the dozens of metahumans in the facility to have circumvented their toy. Now it reported back what I wanted it to, and none of their power inhibiting messages affected my brain.

With a sly smile, I watched as the tangerine on my tray rocked slowly back and forth. If I’d wanted to, I could have sent it careening around the ward like a tennis ball fired from a cannon. But just watching it rock gently was enough. Fine motor control had been required to reconfigure the chip, so I knew I could handle the small stuff like the tangerine, but before I escaped I was going to have to relearn to control so many more of my abilities.

“Good morning Gabriel,” Doctor Scully said suddenly appearing besides my table.

“Good morning, Dr. Scully,” I answered as I drove my thumbnail under the tangerine’s flesh. She’d nearly surprised me enough to lose control of my powers. I couldn’t have that. If Scully suspected that I was out of their control, she’d sign the orders to have me put down like a rabid dog. I couldn’t blame her either. I’d have ordered my death day one if I’d been in charge. Keeping me alive was the biggest mistake the Company could make – again. “How was your weekend? Is your little boy doing well?”

“William is doing fine. Thanks for asking.” Scully looked at her hands as I tore off a section of the fruit and popped it into my mouth.

“So he’s stopped showing any of his special abilities then?”

“I’m afraid not. I’m hoping that if the chip works for you, that it will work for William too. But you’re doing so well that it really is only a matter of time before he can be cured.”

“I’m happy that I’ve been able to help your son, doctor.” She’d told me about her son’s gifts, and how it was because of him that she’d started working for the Company. Scully hoped that a chip like mine would make her son just like everybody else. I couldn’t understand why anyone would want that. “I’d like to meet him someday. Do you think that would be possible?”

Chapter: 3/7

Green with Envy
She led me into the day room of the hospital. Dr. Scully insisted it wasn’t a jail. But I knew better. The shackles that bound my wrists and ankles told me just how much of a prison it was. I was thankful to be out of the straightjacket though, even happier to be out of my room. She’d made sure I could have a real shower too, with only a few attendants ready to hit me with a taser if I was bad. It felt good to be cleaned, shaved and to have my hair out of my eyes.

“Why don’t we sit by the windows Gabriel?” Scully said, placing her hand on the crook of my arm. If she’d slid it through it would have looked like we were on some bizarre date.

“I’d like that,” I answered her. My eyes kept being drawn from her face to look at the other inmates. Most of them had been drugged into oblivion. I could see the telltale scars of invasive surgery on their skulls as well. A few looked at me with hatred in their eyes, but I’d never seen any of them before. “Are they all like me here?”

“Some, although no one is exactly like you are they Gabriel?” She said with a sad smile.

“I hope not,” I said it before I could stop myself. But it was no secret to Dr. Scully that I liked being special. “I can’t see it. See what makes them special. The chip won’t let me. I used to be able to see it all. Where their brains were different, what made them more than human, but it’s gone now.”

“How do you feel about that Gabriel,” she asked as she sat across from me. “Do you miss it?”

“I won’t lie to you Dr. Scully.” I looked into her face, seeing my reflection in the blue of her eyes. “I miss it. But I am tired of being a prisoner. I want to be free. I might even envy them, because they are out here in the ward without all the guards that you have on me.”

And I had so many guards. Four of them were within earshot of our supposedly private conversation. I always smiled when Scully told me that our chats were confidential. I knew she wouldn’t be gossiping about my revelations, but the guards and orderlies didn’t have an oath that they’d sworn to like she had. I knew they talked about me all the time too, since the chip didn’t seem capable of blocking my enhanced hearing.

“Your rehabilitation is going quite well Gabriel. It really should only be a matter of time before you’ve earned some more freedom.”

“Yes, but I will never be allowed to leave this place.” Glancing out the window, I looked at the potted houseplants and greenhouse lights that they used to pretend that we were on the surface, and not several dozen feet underground. “Although I do have to thank you for not letting them dissect me like some frog.”

She opened her mouth to say they wouldn’t have done that but closed it without saying a word. We both knew what they would do with me if I didn’t tow the Company line. “What would you like to talk about today Gabriel?”

“Why don’t we talk about you doctor? Tell me how you ended up working for the Company instead of the FBI.” The surprised look on her face was priceless. I tapped my ear. “I heard them talk about you long before you came into my room. But I’d rather hear the real story from you.”

Chapter: 2/7

Vermillion
“It was a busy day Mr. Gray,” Dr. Scully answered her blue eyes still going over the reports that my daytime handlers had made. Scully was almost always too busy to come see me during the day. It was a shame. I kind of liked her, but it did give me something to look forward to. “How are you feeling?”

“The same,” I answered keeping my voice bland. Never kept eye contact with her for long, I didn’t want her to see inside of my head. “I’ve done everything they asked of me. I’ve been very well behaved.”

You’d be proud of me Dr. Scully. I’ve been good, just like a dog from the pound that’s too desperate to risk losing your affection, so I have jumped through hoops, fetched the ball and didn’t piss on the rug. I’m a good dog doctor. Now why don’t you give me a treat?

“Yes I can see that. Your reports look very good. Is there any discomfort?” She approached me with a confident step. Scully never looked like she was afraid of me. There was no trepidation as she looked over the vermillion scar on the side of my head. “This seems to be healing well. Has it stopped itching?”

“It’s been better now. Thank you for having them give me the Benadryl. I know you were worried that it would interfere with my other meds.” The itching had near driven me mad. I’d been forced to rub my scalp against the walls since my hands were bound up in the straight jacket or in bindings most of the time. “Do you know if it’s working yet?”

“We won’t know until we do some tests Mr. Gray.” Scully sat down on the edge of the bed. They didn’t let me have a chair in the room. I could use a chair for a weapon. I had blinded one of them with one when they’d first captured me. Using my telekinesis I’d sent it careening legs first to put out his eyes. I had to hit him twice of course. “Tomorrow they’ll bring you down to the lab and start testing it.”

“I hope it works soon Doctor.” I leaned against the cool cinderblock wall. If you looked carefully you could still see some of my blood in the nooks and crannies, but they had done as good a job as they could to clean it. “I want to go outside again. I miss the world.”

“You do realize that even if the chip controls your powers Gabriel.” I watched with hooded eyes as she reached out to touch the back of my wrist. It was a brief brush of her fingertips, almost too light to feel. “You may not be able to go free. You killed a lot of people.”

“I know.” I looked down at my lap. “But I’m trying to be better. May I have some more pudding now? Please?”

Chapter: 7/7

Her heavy buckled boots were mere inches from my face as I writhed in pain on the floor as she straddled me. I'm sure some men might have found it a glorious position to be caught in, between the knees of a beautiful woman. But I wasn't impressed. Clawed fingers gripped the back of my head by the hair, and twisted me back so I’d be forced to look up into her ice blue eyes. I could feel the bones in my neck crack and shift as she did it.

“Are you going to break my neck then?” My tongue darted out to lick my very dry lips. “Aren’t you even curious to see if I live or die from this?”

“Not really,” she said her words clipped short. “You threatened to kill me. Curiosity is not something I live for unlike you Sylar. You never should have started this with me.”

My DNA was twisting and protesting as the virus slithered over it like a cloak of thorns. The pain was excruciating as it ran down the back of my legs. It would have been a kindness for her to blow a hole in my skull or snap my neck. I needed to focus. Needed to take control of what was happening to me.

I was not a puppet. Every trick I’d picked up had been learned and adapted to. Yes there were occasional complications when one power would cancel out another or require a part of my brain that was already in use. But I would master her power as well. It was my imperative after all.

There was too much of it though. Too many things to adjust to, and I needed to just figure out what I really wanted. Drinking blood was not something I wanted to do. Death by sunlight another thing to be avoided.

Suddenly the light in the shop grew too bright, as my eyes adapted to become like hers. I could see so much better than I ever had before. Control, I had control of it now. The eyes were really all I wanted from her. The rest I already had in one form or another.

“So you are going to live. We cannot have that. I am going to break your neck now Mr. Sylar. You cannot be allowed to live.”

“Neither can you,” I said in a hushed whisper of my own as I let the raging inferno of nuclear energy free. The heat vaporized her and everything else around me. When I got to my feet, the vampire was gone, my father’s shop was gone, and so was the entire block. Her skull was blackened from the blast and all that had survived it. “We could have been friends. All you had to do was play nice.”

Chapter: 6/7

As I held her against the wall, I let my awareness shift. “You’re too special to resist,” I said as I focused deep enough to see the very strands of her DNA at work. “I always thought vampires were metaphysical creatures like angels and demons. But you’re not. You’ve got a virus.”

“Imagine that,” she said her pale lips drawn back to reveal her jagged teeth. “Would you like me to bite you, so I can give it to you?”

“Yes,” I answered her and tilted my head to the side to look at the rest of her. She was no longer the beautiful predator I’d let hunt me. That game had been fun, but it was too easily won. She couldn’t beat me. But it would be fascinating to find out if her virus would even have an effect on me. With sweet Claire Bear’s healing abilities, I doubted it could even gain purchase on me long enough to replicate.

“It’s worth the chance,” I said as I drew my sleeve up from my wrist. “I was just thinking how much I needed to be able to see in the dark. You’re not a meta-human, but you are an oddity with abilities I might be able process.”

Her teeth latched onto my wrist hard enough that I felt the bones grind together. I tightened my will and squeezed her heart in her chest until her jaw relaxed. “Play nice,” I chastised her. “Or I’ll just crush your heart like a piece of junk mail.”

She seemed to be in pain as she drank from me. I had expected to see her moan in pleasure like the vampires always did in the movies. But apparently I didn’t taste good. I could feel and see the virus her fangs carry surging through my bloodstream. It was painful, and she had to bite me more than once to keep the wound open since I heal so very fast.

Icy fire ran up my arm as I yanked it out of her grip. As the pain riddled my body, I had to let her go. The vampire looked back at me, tilting her head like a cat while she watched me fall to the ground in a shivering heap.

“Good it would serve you right. The virus is almost always fatal. I hope it kills you.”

Chapter: 5/7

“A blind eye?” She snarled at me, her eyes shifting from nearly the same dark brown as mine to the neon blue. “You’ll be very lucky to have eyes in your head when I’m done with you. How dare you touch me!”

She didn’t go for her guns, instead she launched at me, all long legs and arms. Her body barreled into mine, we broke through the old sheetrock wall and tumbled down the narrow steps down to the clock works.

I felt my skull crack when we landed hard on the floor of the shop. Her legs wrapped around my waist while her fingers curved into claws that she dug into my face nearly gouging out my offensive eyes. “Get off of me!”

Pushing against her with my mind and my hands, I shoved her across the shop. But she didn’t crash into the display cases. No, she tumbled in the air and landed on her feet with all the grace of a cat. She leapt into the air again.

Sending a wall of frost at her, she was thrown back from me again, her latex costume covered with ice. She shivered as she tried to get up, but now I was on my feet. “To think I wanted you to find me. That will teach me won’t it?”

With each step I took I forced more of my power on her. I lifted her up then, sliding her along on her back over the floor and up onto the wall where she was pinned like a butterfly on a board while the clocks around her kept ticking.

“And what shall I do with you now? Now that I have the upper hand…should I cut you to ribbons?” Flicking my fingers I cut a thin line down each of her cheek. I watched fascinated as she healed nearly as quickly as I could. “Or maybe you could stop trying to kill me?”

“If you don’t let me go.” Her breath caught as I tightened a grip around her heart. “I will be the one who kills you.”

“Whatever for?” I asked as I reached up to wipe the blood from her cheeks. “I’m no enemy of yours. My name is Sylar.”

Chapter: 4/7

If I thought she was fast when I saw her in the city, it was nothing compared to her speed in my small room. She had me pinned against the ruin of my door. Her hand wrapped around my throat squeezing tight enough to make it hard for me to breathe. My ears were ringing from the impact, and it was taking me too long to concentrate to use any of my power to drive her away.

“You’re human,” she said, bringing her face close to mine while she sniffed at me. Her fingers were cool against my fevered flesh. “How do you do what you do?”

“Neither are you,” I choked out. She slammed my head back again, and I bit down on my lip.

Before it could heal, blood ran down my chin. Her dark eyes narrowed, and her small pink tongue darted out to lick it away. My heart beat harder thundering in my chest. I stopped struggling to get away from her. Instead I used my power to tilt her face up, forcing her fingers from around my neck as I ducked my face down to kiss her.

“You are so beautiful. I was hoping you’d catch me. I just didn’t think it would be so soon.” Her lips were as cool as her fingers, and I lost myself in the touch and taste of them. She stumbled back when I released her. Her eyes wide and I could hear her slow breath catching along with a faint heartbeat that I hadn’t heard before. “You’re a vampire. How curious.”

“You kissed me,” she said as she swallowed. I waited but she didn’t draw her gun again. “Why did you do that?”

“Because I could.” Stepping away from the door, I moved to sit on the edge of my bed, ignoring the broken glass and splinters of wood. “And I think you wanted me to. Besides who am I to turn a blind eye at serendipity?”

Chapter: 3/7

It was warm in my shop when I got there from being shut up all day. The musky smell of old wood and the cleaners I used to fix clocks filled the air. Dozens of them ticked and tocked as I came in. A cuckoo clock sounded the hour, bright yellow, red and green feathers telling the world that it was midnight. Hopefully the owner would come back for that one soon. It was obnoxious as it was bright.

Closing the door behind me, I pressed my hand against the glass after locking it up tight. I could hear no one outside that didn’t belong there. As I peered into the darkness, I made a promise to myself to hunt someone with night vision.

I padded through the shop, grabbed a bottle of water from the small refrigerator and made my way up to my dingy little apartment. Yes the most powerful creature in New York was living in a cramped flat above his dead father’s clock shop. Stretching out on the narrow bed, I used my power to untie my shoes and sent them across the room to the corner near my small TV stand.

The TV didn’t work anymore. Not that I really cared. Someday I’d be able to leave this place, but for now it was the safest place for me to hide. Not many people knew who Sylar really was, and anyone who did wouldn’t expect me to hide in my own home.

Outside the fire escape creaked. It was barely more sound than a roach made skittering on glass, but I knew it was her. She came in through the window before I could scramble to the door. Bullets hit the door near my hand, making me jerk away.

“Now,” she said with her strangely accented voice. “What shall we talk about?”

There is safety in numbers, or at least there’s supposed to be. I don’t like crowds. All those people bumping into me, the way their bodies warm the air with their smells. I’d have built a shell around me to keep them away, but that would make it too easy for the hunter to find me.

I’d dropped down from the sky into the huge crowd of people emerging from one of the theaters on Broadway. Tucking my hands into my pockets, I did my best to blend in. With a measure of my power I’d already changed my face, but that one didn’t hunt by eyesight alone. No she’d catch me by my scent too.

A hand fell onto my shoulder, spinning me around, and I had to fight to keep from killing the man who had grabbed me. “Oh I’m sorry,” he said when he saw the dangerous glint in my eyes. “I thought I knew you.”

“That’s all right,” I said as I ducked into a larger pod of people, shedding one face for another as I went. By the time I was two blocks away, I was wearing Claire Bennett’s skin. That should throw her for a loop even if she did catch my scent. I knew I was being stupid, because above it all my undying curiosity hoped that she could track me.

Chapter: 1/7

The first time I saw her, the bright neon lights were reflecting off of her skin tight catsuit like a kaleidoscope. When she moved it was like watching a panther take flight. Sleek, black and deadly, her guns blazing a trail of destruction tearing apart the creatures she was hunting.

It made my breath catch as I watched from the shadows. Ducking back when a splash of hot blood splattered against the brick wall beside me. I’d never seen such unbridled violence, and it was making my heart race.

She turned towards me then, her eyes the same brilliant blue as one of the glowing tubes of neon. Her lips were pale, pink and barely covering her own sharp teeth as brushed them over the back of her sleeve to wipe the werewolve’s blood away.

Her gun is aimed at me in a fraction of a second. I can see her trying to decide if I’m friend or foe. I don’t wait to find out. Raising my hand, I send her flying backwards into a heavy cement column. She hits it hard enough for it to crack and chunks of it fall to the pavement besides her fallen body. But before I can approach, she is getting back to her feet.

“What are you?” she hisses as she aims at me again. This time she doesn’t hesitate, and I am forced to block her bullets with my power.

“That’s for you to find out,” I said in a whisper as I let the bullets fall to the ground before flying out into the night sky. “If you can catch me.”
