Grey
I’d been playing the good boy for so long that I was starting to worry that I was turning into the mask. But the more Dr. Scully told me about her son, the more I knew I had to meet him. Even more than that, I knew that I had to save him. I couldn’t let them put a chip in his head like they did to me. William might not be able to reprogram it the way that I had. I couldn’t allow that.
Of course I still had no idea how powerful little William might be, but today was the day. Scully was going to take me outside. She was going to let me meet her son. Someone normal would have been thrilled to be going outside after living underground for six months of rehabilitation. But I haven’t been normal in a very long time.
Standing in front of the mirror in my room, I ran my razor over my jaw. I’d have preferred a straight blade, but there was no way my keepers would allow me to have one of those. So there was still a shadow of my beard no matter how hard I tried using the dull plastic disposable. As I washed off my face in the sink, I smiled at my reflection.
“You look happy Gabriel,” Scully said from behind me as she came through the door. She was dressed for the outside world too, no lab coat or scrubs today. She really was very pretty, probably more so because she didn’t try to be.
“Shouldn’t I be?” I felt a surge of panic. “Did they change their mind? Aren’t we going out?”
“No, no we’re going out.” She placed her hands on my arm to offer me her reassurance. There was no sexual tension between us. But I’d been doing my best to convince her that I was her friend. “I wouldn’t let them do something like that to you. You’ve worked so hard. I just wish…”
“I know,” I smiled down at her. “I wish I didn’t have to come back too. But it’ll be good to see the sky. Maybe if I’m good they’ll let me go out again soon.”
The ride in the elevator up to the surface seemed to take days. I could taste the warmth of the sun on my tongue growing stronger with each inch we rose. Four well muscled guards flanked Scully and I. They were all different. Three of them were so much stronger than a normal human. I didn’t know what the fourth guard could do, but then I’d never tested that one.
“You’ll need these.” Scully slid a pair of sunglasses into my hands.
“Thank you Dana,” I said as I put them on. I closed my eyes until I felt the fresh air hit my face after the long walk across the lobby. Opening them slowly, I took my first look at the new world. Sadly the sky was overcast and gray. “Well at least it’s not raining.”
