Notes: Letter Blog entry - worked as a post on the Muses too.

To My Parents,

I’m writing this to all of you, my real parents, my adoptive parents, and to you, Angela, for making me want something so badly that it still hurts that you lied.

Samson, I don’t know if you’re alive or dead. Leaving you to fester in your own filth the way I did was one of the best choices I ever made in my life. You didn’t deserve the quick death I could have given you. You’re a disgusting sack of shit, and I wish to hell I didn’t carry your genetics. I can promise you this; I will never end up like you. I won’t die alone, miserable in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere. When I die, everyone will know my name.

Virginia, I’m sorry you died. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I lost control trying to make you see that I was special, that I was someone. You didn’t want me to be Gabriel, and your death locked that part of me away for a long time. He’s slipped back into my mind now, giving me the insecurities, that fucking need for approval and companionship that Sylar was above. Hope you’re happy about that. I do miss you. You weren’t the worst mother on the planet, and you did love me. I loved you too. I still do.

Angela, you lying bitch. Thank you so much for dangling the Holy Grail in front of my nose, but I can’t blame you for reaching for it. That was my problem. You played the Gabriel card with me, and won the hand. You woke him up. You made me start to care about other people. As much as I hate you, you’re the one who first nudged me back into being remotely human. That doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy dancing on your grave. I hate you most of all, because you made me love you.

To my real mother, whose name I don’t know, I wish I could remember you. I try to. Sometimes I lay awake at night, trying to break through the blackness that shrouds my childhood, but I can’t. I can’t remember what you looked like or the sound of your voice. I hope your next life was better than this one.

I am who you made me.

Notes: The Pretender was another show NBC canceled at the end of season 4. It had a rich mythology. It was about special children being taken from their parents and trained to become anyone they wanted to be. The Center exploited those children. In this story, Samson Gray sold them Gabriel when he was 5.

In a flash of fire and sound my life ended. Hurled through the air, my back shattering into a thousand pieces as the flames destroyed everything in their path. With all that I could do, I wasn’t fast enough. I couldn’t stop time.

I watched in horror as Peter’s body was blasted into ash that scattered on the winds of the firestorm. My lungs were seared as I screamed for him not to leave me, but he was already gone. The one good thing in my life was gone. The only person who gave a shit about me was gone, because he had to play fucking hero, again.

I was still screaming when I came back. The flesh, nerves and bones knitting until I was healthy and whole. Surrounded by blackened wreckage, steel girders hanging like homecoming banners from the heat, I curled into a ball and cried until I had no tears left.

“You stupid fuck!” I screamed into the emptiness that reflected my soul. “I told you. I told you to take regeneration, but oh no, you didn’t need that. You needed to be fast. Speed would keep you alive.”

Stalking out into the sunlight, I squinted and stumbled out into the street. Every building on the block was damaged, bricks scorched and windows busted out. Glass glittered on the pitted pavement as I tried to pick a direction.

I had nowhere to go. There was no one to go home to. I was alone. Fucking Hiro was right. I would die alone.

***
“Take me back!” I screamed at Hiro as I grabbed his fat face and shoved him onto the ground. I dropped to my knees, and held him down with my hands and telekinesis. I kept waiting for him to use his power, so I could learn it from him. “Use it! Use your power on me! Stop me before I kill you!”

“No.” He turned his face to look at me, while I took a hold of his ponytail and used it to twist his neck to the point of snapping. “I’m never using it again. No time traveling. No changing history. Peter Petrelli is dead, and he’s going to stay that way. I’m sorry. He was my friend too.”

“If he was your friend, you’d help me!” Snarling I yanked him up by the hair and slammed him down again hard enough to crack ribs. Blood frothed on his lips, staining the soul patch he’d taken to wearing. “Please, Hiro. Teach me. Show me how.”

“No Sylar. I won’t.” Then he ported away where I couldn’t follow him, leaving me no hope at all.

***
Her screams echoed through the house as I held her in place with my telekinesis. The floor was covered with the pictures that had fallen when I sent her flying into the wall. Broken frames and glass crunched under my feet as I stalked toward the girl with the bright red hair. I could taste her power. The monster that had been quiet for so long licked its lips as I began the cut. Hot blood splattered on my face in a fine stream as I broke through her cranium.

I didn’t know what her ability was. I didn’t care. It didn’t matter. I wanted it.

“Why?” She said her voice a soft squeak as the light dimmed in her eyes.

“Why not?” My fingers curved around her throat as I slid her onto the floor like a broken rag doll. I wrapped her hair around my other hand, and yanked off the top of her skull, tearing the back of her scalp free with a sickening sound. I tossed it across the room, where it landed with a splat, and dipped into her brain to find the prize inside.

“Redemption doesn’t matter. Neither does anything else.”
