It was so cold. I should have run. Should have taken my chance the minute she put the bullet in her brain, but I’d been dumbfounded. I couldn’t move. It was like the slug had gone through mine. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. All I could do was stare as Eden’s blood blossomed on the shattered glass, and her body fell in a heap at my feet on the hard cement floor.
The hot blood splattered onto my bare feet, soaking into the hem of the thin scrubs they’d deigned to let me wear. I was always surprised that I wasn’t being held naked in chains in the dirty, dingy cell. I didn’t even have toilet paper for fuck’s sake.
His power came over me like a blanket of fog, smothering my will, clouding my brain and shutting me down until I was helpless. My chance to run was over. He was back, staring at me through the broken glass without saying a word.
He never spoke. I didn’t know his name. I knew I hated him, and part of me wondered if I could take what he had at all. Would his ability to block my powers keep me from taking his? I was more than willing to find out.
“Oh look it’s my second favorite keeper. Eden had a little headache.” I glared at him. That was all I could do. “I pushed Eden, made her sloppy, and then I made her kill herself. Should I see what your buttons are and push those?”
One eyebrow arched slightly, but that was all he did.
“How much power can you block?” I demanded as four more drones came into the room armed with Tasers and cattle prods. Hank came in last with a hypodermic big enough for the Loch Ness Monster. They meant business. I could feel the hate when Bennet came into the room.
“More than you have, Gabriel,” Bennet said with a sneer. He climbed through the broken window, crouching over Eden’s cooling corpse. Unlike the others he held a real gun on me. I knew he wanted to kill me more than anything, his fingers checking her throat for a pulse as if someone could live through that.
“Aw what’s the matter, Bennet? Won’t your masters let you put me down like a rabid dog? Do you have my name etched on all your bullets? That's Sylar with an S.” With a smirk, I kicked a piece of Eden’s brain matter across the floor where it caught on the leg of his gray suit. I laughed as it slithered down his leg leaving a trail of blood on the way down. “Kill me! Try to kill me! It’s what you want to do isn’t?”
“Shut up, Gabriel!” He screamed at me, raising the gun and shoving me back against me wall hard enough to knock the wind out of me. The muzzle of the gun pressed up under my jaw, and I could feel the tension in his wrist as I wrapped my fingers around it, trying to make him let go. “I am going to kill you for what you did to Eden!”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know she was your girlfriend. Does he know you’re cheating on him?” My eyes flick back over at the big silent black man. “Which one of you bottoms? I bet he makes you squeal like a pig, since obviously he’s not much of a screamer. A grunter maybe? Does Claire join in with you too?”
Bennet pressed his forearm harder against my neck, choking me, cutting off my blood and air. My fingers clawed at his wrist as he tightened his grip on the trigger. My nails dug into his skin as I scrambled, and I brought my knee up to connect with his balls only to have him press harder. My vision was blacking out. It hurt, but I couldn’t make a sound to beg to be let go.
“Bennet no!” Another guy came through the door of the cell, his hair was the same color as steel wool, and his hand clamped on Bennet’s shoulder to pull him away from me.
I crumpled onto the floor, legs spread out, gasping for breath. My neck was bruised and my voice cracked as I started laughing. My body shook with it as Thompson pulled Bennet away from me. I laughed harder when Bennet slipped in Eden’s blood and went down on all fours, his horn-rimmed glasses falling into the ruin of her face.
“Shut him the fuck up!” Thompson screamed as they hit me with one Taser shot after the other until I was twitching like a marionette.
I came to hours later, strapped to a gurney. Waking up was a surprise, but it answered the most important question of all. They weren’t going to kill me. That meant I could still win.
