Chapter: 6/7
As I held her against the wall, I let my awareness shift. “You’re too special to resist,” I said as I focused deep enough to see the very strands of her DNA at work. “I always thought vampires were metaphysical creatures like angels and demons. But you’re not. You’ve got a virus.”
“Imagine that,” she said her pale lips drawn back to reveal her jagged teeth. “Would you like me to bite you, so I can give it to you?”
“Yes,” I answered her and tilted my head to the side to look at the rest of her. She was no longer the beautiful predator I’d let hunt me. That game had been fun, but it was too easily won. She couldn’t beat me. But it would be fascinating to find out if her virus would even have an effect on me. With sweet Claire Bear’s healing abilities, I doubted it could even gain purchase on me long enough to replicate.
“It’s worth the chance,” I said as I drew my sleeve up from my wrist. “I was just thinking how much I needed to be able to see in the dark. You’re not a meta-human, but you are an oddity with abilities I might be able process.”
Her teeth latched onto my wrist hard enough that I felt the bones grind together. I tightened my will and squeezed her heart in her chest until her jaw relaxed. “Play nice,” I chastised her. “Or I’ll just crush your heart like a piece of junk mail.”
She seemed to be in pain as she drank from me. I had expected to see her moan in pleasure like the vampires always did in the movies. But apparently I didn’t taste good. I could feel and see the virus her fangs carry surging through my bloodstream. It was painful, and she had to bite me more than once to keep the wound open since I heal so very fast.
Icy fire ran up my arm as I yanked it out of her grip. As the pain riddled my body, I had to let her go. The vampire looked back at me, tilting her head like a cat while she watched me fall to the ground in a shivering heap.
“Good it would serve you right. The virus is almost always fatal. I hope it kills you.”
