I could hear the man’s watch ticking as he checked my bindings. A needle slid beneath my skin. The lab technician did it slowly, it felt as if it was miles long, and he was going an inch at a time. I wanted to scream, but they had me gagged. Bright lights burned through my eyelids as I bit down on the gag at the searing pain.
“Is he awake?” It was his voice again, the man with the horned rim glasses. He had an unnatural hate for me. I could see it when he comes to glare at me in my cell.
“Yeah, he’s awake.” The needle twitched, sending a spasm down my arm until my fingers drummed on the steel table I was strapped to. “No one could sleep through this. Are you sure they don’t want me to knock him out for these tests?”
“No, they want him awake.” He was lying. I could hear it in his voice. “And I want this bastard to suffer for what he tried to do to my daughter.”
Daughter, ah that explained it. It was my fault though. I should have been more careful when I went after the cheerleader. I certainly should have made sure I was popping open the right skull. Hindsight, Gabriel…
The poison he pumped into me was spreading like ice water in my veins. Arching my back, I lost control of my legs, and my heels pounded on the table. The back of my head slammed into it like a gong. I could smell my own piss as it soaked the hospital gown they’d dressed me in.
I came back to the stink of burning hair. They’d used the shock paddles on me again. They’d killed me again. Bennett ordered them to keep me alive. If it takes me an eternity that man will suffer for this. Killing his daughter will be nothing compared to the rest of what he has coming.
But first I need to get out of here. Time to play possum.
