Part One
God and Man - Part Two
Father Douglas’ power was making my fingertips tingle. It was a different sensation, but I’d get that under control once I learned to use the ability. Elle’s files said he could heal, not himself but others. Who am I if not benevolent to those in need, from time to time? I slipped into the ER of Chicago General, and I won’t go into how the hospital smells. Everyone and their dog knows that hospitals stink. Luckily I’ll never be in one again.
Doctors and nurses rushed around me, no one paid much attention to me. Well a few did, but it wasn’t because I was dangerous. It was because they liked what they were seeing. I didn’t mind.
The sounds of crying drew me behind one of the curtains, and I found a child sobbing. His fingers were in traction, and there was an IV in his other arm. Alligator tears were streaming down his face. I could almost feel his pain. I could see the breaks in his arm glowing through his pale skin.
“Are you the doctor?” he asked through sniffles. “It hurts.”
“I know.” I brushed the back of my fingers over the warm glow of his pain, drawing it into me until his bones knitted. I could see the pain fade from his eyes as his sniffles dried. The pain shot through me for a moment and then my own regeneration healed the breaks in my wrist. Without waiting for his reaction, I went to the next bed and plied my new gift like I was the Angel Gabriel himself. Each time I drew the injury into my own body, and then I healed. Father Douglass wouldn’t have been able to survive what I’d just done.
I took a cab to Natalie’s apartment. She lived on the fifth floor. I didn’t have any trouble getting through the security gate, all it took was holding it open for an old lady and her trio of fluffy kick-me dogs. “Have a nice afternoon, ma’am.”
Using my telekinesis I unlocked Natalie’s door. The living room looked empty, so did the kitchen. But I knew she was there. I could almost feel the life in her. Part of the good Father’s ability. Life wasn’t something I could taste, but I could certainly feel her pain if she was in it. One of my favorite moments was when I sent that shattered glass at Mohinder’s into the back of Peter’s skull.
There was a vase filled with dried flowers and marbles on the fireplace mantel. I picked it up and poured the marbles out, before they could hit the floor, I caught them with my mind and sent them in a spray like a shotgun blast throughout the room. The marbles ricocheted against the walls, I heard a cry of pain from one corner, and then the front door was shoved open.
“Hey there, gruesome.” Turning I saw the marbles stop as if they’d hit a shield of some sort. The guy was tall, quite a few inches taller than I was. He was carrying a staff like he’d walked out of the fucking Lord of the Rings while wearing a black leather trench coat. I liked the coat; I might have to steal it from him if he didn’t get too much blood on it. He sent the marbles back at me with considerable force along with something more. “That the best you’ve got? Fozare!”
“Who the hell are you?” I demanded, taking a step back while drawing on all the electrical power in the area.
“I the hell am, Harry Dresden.” His shield reflects most of the lightning that I send at him. The rest is absorbed by his coat. “You shouldn’t have done that. I really like this coat. Fulmitas!”
“Payback.” I’ve never seen anything like it. What is this guy? Lightning and wind, does he control weather? He sends his own lightning storm at me, but instead of dodging it, I snatch at the power using it to build my own force. It starts to burn the skin on my palms, but I don’t care. I’ll get better. With a roar I send the new blast at him, concentrating on the center of his shield.
“Cute trick,” Dresden said, his eyes narrowing on me. “Let’s see if you can absorb this.”
Suddenly I was caught in a giant fist, lifting off the floor and sent crashing through a wall. I felt my spine snap and realign as it healed. Whatever he was using on me hurt, it hurt more than anything I’d felt since becoming Sylar. I had to have it. All of it.
“Claire?” Out of the corner of my eye I saw a flicker of long blonde hair. She was hustling a woman toward the door. She was taking Natalie away from me, and she was helping Dresden. I rushed through the broken wall, limping the first couple of steps as I healed.
“Now you’ve really pissed me off. Of course you know this means war.” Anger boiled through me. Pointing a finger at the carpet beneath Dresden, I used another power to disintegrate the floor – carpet, wood and all – sending him to tumble down. “Can you fly?”
“Holy crap, veritas!” I hear Dresden cry as he falls.
"Claire. How nice to see you. Leave the rabbit and you can go." I don’t have time to see what he’s doing instead I slammed the door in Claire’s path.
“No, I saved her. She’s coming with me.” Claire always so brave. Always so stupid.
“Saved her and brought me someone so much more interesting. Tell your friend Dresden I’ll be seeing him gain. If he survives.” I step toward Claire and Natalie. As usual Claire doesn’t have a weapon. Natalie starts to blend into the background as her ability takes effect.
“You can tell him yourself,” Claire said cringing from my approach.
“I forgot my broomstick.” Dresden floated back through the floor on a column of air. His coat billows around him as he lands and aims his staff at me again. “How about a little fire, Scarecrow? Fuego!”
This time the light that hit me was like being at the center of the sun. My skin blisters and peels, falling from my bones. I can’t regenerate fast enough, and to save my miserable life I throw myself out the window. The pain is too much. I can’t slow my fall. I hit the ground at terminal velocity, striking the sidewalk like a sack of wet cement.
When I come to, Dresden is standing over me. His staff is pointed at my head. *Before you heal up, I'll give you a choice. Get out of my town. Don't come back.”
He hit me with more magical lightning making my body twitch on the sidewalk. Gasping in pain, I reach out and wrap my fingers around his ankle. Using my new found gift, I force his bones to shatter sending him down to on one knee. I draw on my most powerful ability, and use it to shove Dresden away from me into a parked car. "I'll go when I'm ready to."
“Son of a bitch!” He cries out in pain.
My clothes are ruined. But I can walk away. "Next time I'm going to shove that staff where the sun don't shine."
I tossed out the address to Rachel Miller’s apartment. I didn’t need her anymore. I had a new obsession now, and his name was Harry Dresden. I couldn’t wait to see how his brain worked.
