The accused held his head up high. The lights of the courtroom reflected off the spiderweb of cracks in his glasses. His face was haggard. His beard was graying, and his hairline receding. His blue eyes glanced over the gallery where he heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of his daughter who was wearing another cheerleading costume. Noah’s smile spread when Claire waved a pom pom at him while Mr. Muggles yapped from Sandra’s lap.
His lawyer, Nathan Petrelli, gave him a smile that belonged on the side of a city bus, as he helped Noah get settled with the chains that bound his hands and feet. “Don’t worry, Noah. We’ll get you out of here in time to have Christmas dinner with your family.”
The bailiff called the court to order, and everyone stood as the judge stepped up behind the bench. There were murmurs in the crowd, and Claire’s eyes filled with tears, as the Honorable Gabriel Gray took the bench. Noah’s good mood evaporated when Sylar’s gavel struck with a sound like a gunshot.
Sylar smiled over at Noah and Nathan. “It’s so good to see you, Noah. I’m glad you weren’t late. You know how much I hate it when people are late. It makes a bad impression on the jury.”
There were sounds of agreement from the jury, and Noah blanched when he took his first look at the twelve men seated there. They were all Sylar. Each and every one of them was a clone to the monster wearing robes on the bench.
“I object!” Nathan’s voice rang out.
“Overruled,” Sylar said with a smirk. “You can’t object to anything, Nathan. You’re dead.”
Nathan fell back into his seat, red blood gushing from the slice across his throat. Sylar chuckled as Angela Petrelli started to scream from the doorway into the courtroom. Like Noah she was dressed in an orange jumpsuit and chains. She tried to reach her dying son, pulling away from her guards before falling in a heap at Nathan’s feet while his blood soaked into her clothes. Nathan reached out for his mother, snapping the string of pearls around her neck and they rolled free across the floor like a spray of snow as he died.
“Order in the court!” Sylar’s gavel struck again. “I have places to go, people to kill. This is taking too long. Bring in Parkman.” He counted to three and smiled as Parkman was shoved in next to his co-defendants. “You’re all guilty of attempted murder and kidnapping.”
“Kidnapping?” Noah questioned Sylar. “I was doing my job!”
“I’m not talking about the Company, Noah. I’m talking about the three of you attempting to murder me and kidnapped my body when you forced me to become Nathan. I have decided to punish each and every one of you to the maximum allowed by law, and since I am judge, jury and executioner, I am the law.”
Sylar stood and ordered the guards to bring Parkman forward. “I never wanted your power, but I can’t think of a better way to carry out my sentence on them. You were a pawn in their game, so you will get death. They will be locked into a Hell on earth thanks to your power.”
“I won’t do that for you, you monster!” Parkman struggled against his chains as the guards who were now also wearing Sylar’s face pushed him onto his knees.
“I know you won’t, and since I want it done right. I’ll be doing it myself.” Sylar licked his lips as he sliced Parkman’s head open and stole his power. He took a deep breath and smiled as Parkman’s corpse fell to the ground, more blood spreading to join Nathan’s and Angela’s pearls.
“Hope you enjoy your punishment as much as I will,” he chuckled as he locked eyes with Noah and Angela. “Court is adjourned.”
