Notes: West dies, Sylar hunts Claire...Brains, brains, blood
They thought they were so clever. Sneaking out of the house to go on their little date. It was really too bad that Bennett and his annoying little woman didn’t have ears as good as mine. I’d been searching for them for so long. And now little Claire was close enough that I could taste her. I wouldn’t fail again, not this time. She had something I needed desperately if I was ever going to take care of Peter Petrelli. Just thinking about him made me grind my teeth until they hurt.
Thanks to Dale, I could listen to the house from a block and a half away. Far enough that I could watch Bennett head for work in his purple drone’s uniform for his crappy assed office supply job, and he wouldn’t get suspicious. Of course it helped that I parked in a different place everyday while I watched and learned their coming and goings. It also helped that I stole a different car for it too. Ducking beneath the dashboard of the Mustang I’d taken last night, I listened as Bennett’s car drove off into the great beyond. I didn’t move until I couldn’t hear him anymore.
Now that papa bear was gone, I relaxed. The family wasn’t anywhere near as paranoid as Bennett was or as well trained. For people who were supposed to be in hiding, you’d think they’d have at least changed their appearance a little bit. How about dying Claire’s hair dark or Sandra actually using a little conditioner on her Brillo pad like mess? It was pretty obvious that little Claire bear wasn’t their’s. She was pretty.
He didn’t fly in fast, not like Nathan Petrelli had back at Kirby Plaza. He more hovered and then landed. The kid had dark hair and Claire came rushing out of the house to see him. Ah young love…it made me want to puke.
“So do we get to go?” the flying kid asked. “Did your parents give you permission or are we sneaking?”
“I couldn’t use the going to see the manatees excuse again, even if it is the truth this time. My mom said yes. I didn’t ask my dad. So Sea World here we come!”
“I’ll be here early tomorrow morning to pick you up. So let’s get to school.”
“I can’t wait for tomorrow. I’m starting to feel like a shut-in.” Claire let the kid pull her into his arms and they took off flying. This just kept getting better and better. Now I wouldn’t just get Claire’s power. I’d get to fly too. Two for the price of one admission, now that’s a good deal.

The drive down to San Diego wasn’t bad. Boring, but not bad at all, I knew the way of course. I’d memorized the Thomas Brothers book for southern California as soon as I’d found out the Bennetts were there. Last night I’d skimmed through the San Diego edition too while sipping over priced coffee at Borders. But no sense in buying something I could read on the spot and never forget.
Southern California was brown, dirty high desert brown, not as ugly as Texas, but close. At least I could see the Pacific Ocean out of the passenger side windows as I cruised down the 5. Sprawling beach side towns were speckled here and there as I went south until I found the Sea World Exit.
It was early. The parking lot was filled with only a few cars. I didn’t know if Claire and West were here yet. I could smell the ocean as I took a leisurely walk across to the entrance gate and paid for admission. It was worth the price if I got both Claire and West. Immortality and flight – I’d be almost perfect then – until I got Peter.
It’s all about the knowledge. I’m sure that Peter thinks it’s about the power, but it’s not. I just want to learn all I can about what makes us different. But I do have to admit that finding out how he works is my fondest dream. Being able to absorb power just by walking past someone, it made my heart beat just a little bit faster to think of it.
Strolling around the meager crowd at Sea World was nice. I had my baseball hat drawn down over my face, but did my best to keep an eye on the sky. There were too many noises for me to try to listen for the young lovers, and the song of the whales was enough to make blood come out of the ears if I tried. Although I was pretty sure most of them were singing for freedom and fish.
The dolphins sounded like they were gossiping like old ladies as I passed by their feeding circle. More whistles and clicks of their sonar made me cringe. I was going to have to find someplace quieter to wait for Claire.
The Penguin Encounter seemed like the perfect spot. I walked into the cool and darkened room, where you could take a moving sidewalk past the huge behind glass display of the park’s penguin colonies. I went to the side instead, where you could sit on comfortable benches in the near pitch blackness and just watch the playful little birds. I knew Claire would have to come see them. They were just too cute for any teenaged girl to pass by.
It was at least an hour later when I heard them come inside. Whispers of how much fun it was to fly directly into the park without paying for tickets and other moronic giggles. I was alone on the upper tier. I’d spent the time waiting flicking little bits of my power to make anyone else who had sat down feel like they were being pinched by unseen hands to make sure I had privacy.
Claire and West were cuddling as they stepped onto the moving sidewalk. He stood behind her, his hands on her shoulders. She was beaming, all white teeth and long golden hair. I wanted her so very badly. But first I needed to make sure she couldn’t get away from me again.
West let go of her for an instant, and I had him then. Using my power, I yanked him up and over the railing, while I crushed his heart to kill him before he could cry out. He didn’t even get to whimper as he fell in a heap at my feet. I cut his skull open between one heartbeat and the next.
“West? West?” Claire was turning in a circle on the moving path, then walking against it to back track where her boyfriend had gone. “Where are you? This isn’t funny.”
“I think it is,” I said, hovering in the shadows above her. “Tag Claire. You’re it.”
“Sylar!” She hissed my name, and started running for all she was worth. It’s nice to know that she cared about West enough not to bother checking to see if he was dead. What a heartless little bitch.
She shoved people out of her way, until she was outside. I flew over the top of the fallen angry people. Most of them didn’t even see me, just the frightened girl who was racing to get outside. Such a rude child, she didn’t say she was sorry once.
Claire was fast, running for her very life. I stayed above her. Every time she tried to go into another ride or display, I’d use my telekinesis to block the entrance and lock her out. I knew where I wanted her. It was just a matter of herding the little bitch.
I could hear her panting by the time she got to the Shark Encounter. It was the only door that was open to her. I could hear her heart pounding in sync with mine as I landed behind her and a large crowd of students dressed in their college colors. They were big, I didn’t mind. It would be more of a challenge this way. When I needed them out of the way, I’d take care of them. I really didn’t care who I killed to get to Claire. Not now, not ever really. When I’d gone after her in Odessa, she’d just been a name on the list. Now I knew what she had, and I wanted it so very badly.
The air was most and cool in the exhibit. The twisting pathway lead us past tanks and tide pools of different species of sharks. So much potential for killing in their pea sized brains, but they didn’t do it out of anything other than instinct. Not like me. I did it to learn. And this time, I did it for revenge, not just the power. Noah Bennett had hurt me, more than anyone ever had. Now it was payback time. That bastard needed to know what real pain felt like.
She moved quickly trying to put more and more people between us. But it never seemed to help. I’d just shove my way past people or nudge them with my gifts to get them out of my way. Unlike Claire I did say excuse me along the way. When it looked like she was getting too far ahead of me, I yanked on her hair hard enough for her feet to go out from under her. The jocks all huddled around her and helped her to her feet.
I waited for her to tell them about me, but she didn’t. Brave little hero knew I’d kill them if she did. Hell I might kill them anyway. Collateral damage was acceptable. There was a glowing blue light at the end of the passage. The big finale of the exhibit, the underwater tunnel, this was the place. Now I had her where I wanted her.
As I entered the passage, I used my power to break the moving sidewalk. Then I let Claire feel it as I wrapped it around her ankles, stopping her in place. The boys just slipped right on past her. I drew her towards me, keeping her lips sealed shut as well. I wasn’t in the mood to listen to her scream. Above and around us, the sharks swam in lazy circles.
“It’s a shame they won’t be able to smell your blood in here.” I flicked one hand behind me to bring down the emergency doors that would keep the water from flooding the rest of the building if the tunnel shattered and keep the rest of the tourists out. I didn’t bother with the exit; I would need it to make my escape.
Once we were alone, I let her speak. “Please…”
“Is that the best you can come up with? Shame isn’t it? You have that amazing gift, but no super strength, no offensive weapons, nothing you can use against me.” I forced her to her knees; all she could do was whimper. I walked to her slowly. “I almost wish I used a knife to do this. I think it might even hurt more if I did.”
The cutting had to be done quickly, much more quickly than ever before. I’d seen how fast Petrelli healed when I’d gone for him in Mohinder’s apartment. I couldn’t afford to let that happen again.
The bullet hit me in the stomach. The little bitch was armed. I did not see that coming. Gasping in pain I clutched my gut, hot red blood spilled over my hands. “Should have gone for the heart princess. Didn’t your daddy teach you anything?”
Pain mingled with rage, and I let lose with a wave of frost freezing her in place. Along side the walkway, I could see spider webs of the cold tearing through the thick Plexiglas tube. I’d let it all loose. No holding back. Claire was dead. Thick ice covered her body. I could hear the sounds of the tunnel cracking echoing in the chamber, while salty water started to spout through hairline fractures.
“No,” I grunted as I stumbled over to the Clairesicle. My blood was mixing with the water on the floor. The sharks were swimming along ignoring the freedom that would soon be coming their way. I had to get her gift before the tunnel collapsed. If I didn’t I’d get the choice of three deaths, bleeding to death, drowning or shark bait. I didn’t like any of those choices at all.
When I fell to my knees in front of her, I could see her eyes starting to flicker beneath her frozen lids. I didn’t have much time. My hand was shaking as I started to cut again. It was not nearly as neat and clean as my usual work, but you’ll forgive me I’m sure. The water was lapping at my knees, nearly a foot deep as I kept working. More cracks and fountains were sprouting up all around me. With a final scream, I reached up and used my hands to rip off the top of her skull.
I reached my fingers inside of her brain, exploring the nooks and crannies while I found the source of her gift. The water doubled and tripled in depth while I accessed the information and worked to change my own brain to match. With each death it took longer and longer to learn, as I had to make sure that one power didn’t short circuit another. In the beginning I hadn’t known about that. I’d lost more than a couple of gifts along the way because of it, but now I knew better. I just didn’t have much time.
The sharks were grinning at me, while the alarms echoed my own screams as I rerouted my brain. Drawing up my bloody shirt, I watched as the bullet was pushed from the wound and it sealed up behind it. I slogged towards the exit, I was soaked through and through, the blood on my clothes was a pink wash by the time I was far enough to see the way out.
With one last bit of power, I blew out the rest of the tunnel. I’d let the sharks take care of Claire’s body. There’d be no coming back for the little brat this time. I just hoped they got it all on their security video so Noah Bennett could watch me kill her again and again and again.
