Forget Me Not
I was smiling, inside and out as I watched Heidi climb into the car after the boys, Nathan’s sons, my sons, my new family. I looked at the face in the window’s reflection. It wasn’t mine, and I hated wearing it. But it could be worse; I could still think it was mine. Being Nathan Petrelli wasn’t all bad. Heidi was quite taken with the new Nathan, the attentive, loving, Nathan who took care of his family not only his career. I liked her. She liked me. I hoped she’d like me when I was me again.
“You need to get rid of her, Nathan. She’s holding you back.” I jumped as Tracy ran her hand through the back of my hair.
I knew from Nathan’s stolen memories how many times Angela had said the same thing to him over the years, especially when Heidi was paralyzed. It was no wonder Nathan was such a cold hearted fucker being raised by a pair of lizards like Angela and Arthur Petrelli.
My smile got bigger at the thought that I knew how to love people more than he did. It was so ironic. Tracy, the stupid slut, assumed I was smiling for her. I could feel how much she wanted my attention. She’d be getting it soon too. If anyone was holding me back, it was her. She needed to die, just like Angela and anyone else that still cared about Nathan except Heidi and the boys.
“She isn’t holding me back.” I glared at Tracy. My eyes going a few shades darker, not the stupid bitch would notice the difference, as they met hers. “We’re getting closer. We’ve bonded since Angela’s death, and she is the mother of my children. I’ve asked her to remarry me.”
“But what about me? I’m the one who put you in this office. I”ve done so much for you.” Her lips thinned as she moved to get between me and the window.
“Be careful, Tracy. I don’t want anyone to think we have an inappropriate relationship.”
“No fear of that. You haven’t touched me in months, not since Angela died.”
“I have to think of my family, Tracy. I know you don’t understand that. But I need to do what’s best for them.” I haven’t touched you because you make me want to puke.
She didn’t get the hint. She never did. Her hand slid under my jacket, and she ran her sharp nails over my side. It sent a shiver of revulsion through me. I snatched her hand in mine, twisting her fingers together until the bones ground together. Tracy tried to jerk away, but I wouldn’t let her. I didn’t let go until she yanked with all her strength, and she stumbled backwards nearly losing her balance on her high heels.
“Well if you wanted to get rough, Nathan,” she said huskily as she started to unbutton her blouse. “All you had to do was say so.”
“I do like to get rough,” I said. “But not here. Not in my office and not with you.”
“Why not, Nathan?” She came toward me, slithering like a snake. Was Heidi the only woman Nathan was with that wasn’t a reptile? As she came closer, she stepped out of her skirt, and peeled off her blouse. Standing there in her underwear she crooked her finger calling me to her. “It’s not as if you haven’t fucked me on your desk before.”
I knew Nathan had. Those memories churned my stomach like so many others, becoming part of me, destroying who I really was. I would have been less turned on by watching the Tella Tubbies. She was worse than Maya, just another toy that had stopped being useful.
If I’d remembered who I was sooner, she’d have been dead a long time ago. But I had to wait until I took care of a few other details before I shed Nathan’s skin. Angela had paid for her part, but I still had Parkman and Noah to take care of. If I’d killed the three of them too close together, Peter might have figured it out. But it’s been weeks since Angela’s heart attack, plenty of time for the next step.
“If that’s what you want to do.” I said with my own voice. Tracy didn’t notice the difference, not that I was surprised. So few people alive knew what Sylar’s voice sounded like anymore. I was going to enjoy reminding the world very, very soon. The plan came to me between one footstep and the next. It wasn’t only time for Tracy Straus to die; it was time for the Nathan Petrelli encore to end.
I licked my lips and stalked over to her, with each step another layer of Nathan Petrelli’s persona slipped away. After my voice, it was his body language, as my legs lengthened, and I regained my height. Then when Tracy was on her knees in front of me, too intend on my zipper to notice the change in my body or voice, I let my true face out.
“Tracy.” I reached down and tilted her face back. Her eyes widened when she saw me, the real me, for the first time. She scuttled back, on her ass and heels. I could finally taste her fear over her desire. I closed my eyes and breathed it in like savoring a fine wine. “I don’t think we’ve met. My name is Sylar.”
“What?”
“You’re going to kill, Nathan, Tracy. Punish him for turning his back on you and going back to his ex-wife.”
She scrambled further back and tried to get up to run, but I couldn’t allow that. I took hold of her with my power and flung her into the glass display cases that lined one side of my – no Nathan’s – office. The glass shattered, sending shards that sparkled onto the carpet.
Tracy went down, her breath ragged, as her blood blossomed on the floor to mingle with the crimson spattered glass. She was stunned, but still had enough of her brains going to grab my ankle as I stood over her. The pain was excruciating as she froze my flesh and bone solid. I hissed as I reached down to grab her by her hair and yanked her head back.
“That’s a nice power. I used to have that one. Think I’d like it back.” The regeneration fought the ice, but I was still shivering as I raped her mind to see just how she did it. It was easy to ride her terror and make her power mine. She was gibbering as I pulled her back onto her feet using my power and my bare hands. I held her until we were eye to eye, and I gave her a little kiss before snapping her head all the way around. Her corpse landed in a boneless heap at my feet.
“Now it’s time for the real magic. I had to hunt a long time to get this power, but it was all worth it.” Crouching down, I took Tracy’s face between my hands and went to work. When I was done all trace of the bitch was gone, in her place was the broken, bleeding body of Senator Nathan Petrelli.
I stretched as I stood up, and smiled as I picked up Tracy’s purse and slipped into her skin. This would be the last time I wore someone else’s face, and I’d do it only long enough to get out of Washington, DC and frame Tracy Straus for Nathan’s assassination. Then once Noah and Parkman were gone, I’d go back home and make Heidi Petrelli love me for I really am.
