Chapter: 2/7
There is safety in numbers, or at least there’s supposed to be. I don’t like crowds. All those people bumping into me, the way their bodies warm the air with their smells. I’d have built a shell around me to keep them away, but that would make it too easy for the hunter to find me.
I’d dropped down from the sky into the huge crowd of people emerging from one of the theaters on Broadway. Tucking my hands into my pockets, I did my best to blend in. With a measure of my power I’d already changed my face, but that one didn’t hunt by eyesight alone. No she’d catch me by my scent too.
A hand fell onto my shoulder, spinning me around, and I had to fight to keep from killing the man who had grabbed me. “Oh I’m sorry,” he said when he saw the dangerous glint in my eyes. “I thought I knew you.”
“That’s all right,” I said as I ducked into a larger pod of people, shedding one face for another as I went. By the time I was two blocks away, I was wearing Claire Bennett’s skin. That should throw her for a loop even if she did catch my scent. I knew I was being stupid, because above it all my undying curiosity hoped that she could track me.
