Chapter: 4/7

If I thought she was fast when I saw her in the city, it was nothing compared to her speed in my small room. She had me pinned against the ruin of my door. Her hand wrapped around my throat squeezing tight enough to make it hard for me to breathe. My ears were ringing from the impact, and it was taking me too long to concentrate to use any of my power to drive her away.

“You’re human,” she said, bringing her face close to mine while she sniffed at me. Her fingers were cool against my fevered flesh. “How do you do what you do?”

“Neither are you,” I choked out. She slammed my head back again, and I bit down on my lip.

Before it could heal, blood ran down my chin. Her dark eyes narrowed, and her small pink tongue darted out to lick it away. My heart beat harder thundering in my chest. I stopped struggling to get away from her. Instead I used my power to tilt her face up, forcing her fingers from around my neck as I ducked my face down to kiss her.

“You are so beautiful. I was hoping you’d catch me. I just didn’t think it would be so soon.” Her lips were as cool as her fingers, and I lost myself in the touch and taste of them. She stumbled back when I released her. Her eyes wide and I could hear her slow breath catching along with a faint heartbeat that I hadn’t heard before. “You’re a vampire. How curious.”

“You kissed me,” she said as she swallowed. I waited but she didn’t draw her gun again. “Why did you do that?”

“Because I could.” Stepping away from the door, I moved to sit on the edge of my bed, ignoring the broken glass and splinters of wood. “And I think you wanted me to. Besides who am I to turn a blind eye at serendipity?”
