No Late Fees
Dust tickled my nose as I walked through the stacks of leather bound books. The special collections section of the library was nearly empty. Only a few graduate students lurked in the far corners studying away. It was late, almost midnight, and they should be clearing out soon.

I’d been watching the Librarian for hours. She wasn’t much to look at. Kept her hair pulled back in a tight bun, wearing a dusky blue sweater over a white blouse. I was surprised to see she was wearing pants instead of a skirt. She reminded me of the nuns from high school and more than a little bit of my mother.

I didn’t know what she could do. Elle didn’t have that listed on her phone just her name and a rating. The Librarian had four stars. That meant she was worth the six hours I’d been lurking waiting for a little privacy. The students paid enough for their tuition they didn’t need to see me work.

I ran my fingertips over the spine of another of the books, reading the faces of everyone who’d ever checked it out of the library. I was that bored.

My Librarian got up from the reference desk, pushing her wire rimmed glasses up her nose and walked over the dregs. “It’s time for closing. You need to pack up.”

She didn’t see me lurking in the shadows. I’m too good at it. I waited while she walked the students to the door, watching while the rest of the night shift left. I wanted her alone, but one of the others was staying.

“I’ll walk you to your car, Gloria,” he said with a tired smile. “Can’t be too careful.”

“No you can’t be,” my Librarian answered. “Thank you, Aaron.”

Yes thank you, Aaron. Now I’ll have to kill you too, and I wanted to do a quick slash and grab with Gloria. The biggest decision was whether to take them here or outside. I prefer hunting indoors. There’s less open space and more to work with.

Pointing across the way, I sent a few books flying off a far shelf making a goodly amount of noise. Gloria and Aaron both jumped. He got that same moronic protective look on his face that Peter Petrelli gets when he’s about to play hero. I pulled another book from the shelf next to me. They landed with a loud thump, and Aaron came rushing over in a furious snit.

With a smile I stepped out of the darkness and made a cutting motion with my hand, slicing deeply across Aaron’s throat. Hot blood splashed, striking the books and running down the front of his shirt. He took several faltering steps before he realized he was dead, then tumbled face first onto the floor with a squelching sound.

I ran my finger through a smear of blood on the spine of a book on my way to Gloria. She was fidgeting by the front door, her cell phone at the ready. Her eyes were wide as I came towards her.

“I’ve already called 911,” she said, holding up a can of something or other.

“No you didn’t.” With a flick of my wrist, the can and her cell phone flew out of her hands, over the shelves into the dark. “You didn’t have time.”

Gloria slammed open the library’s door and took off running down the sidewalk. She was faster than I expected, but I do enjoy a good race. Hopefully she’d show me what her power was. Secret Santa gets a little old after awhile.

Twenty feet away from me, before she could turn a corner I knocked her legs out from under her. She went down hard, skinning her hands and knees on the cement. There was a grunt of pain and then a growl that set the hair on the back of my on end.

“What is that?” I whispered as I came at her, picking up the pace.

Instead of getting up or scrambling away, her body heaved on the ground writhing in pain. Another growl sounded, and I watched fascinated as her nails curled into claws. Bones snapped and reshaped as she shed her human shape. When it was over, I found myself staring down a mountain lion.

“Oh show me more.” I hit her with a ball of lightning, not enough to kill her just enough to make her roar in pain. When the electricity hit, I saw her flesh fight and twist to change again. I held her in place with my telekinesis with one hand while I shocked her with the other. The smell of burnt fur nearly made me gag. “Can you do more? Show me!”

My Librarian curled into a ball, getting smaller as I watched, her arms stretching out and feathers replaced the fur. I wanted her power so bad it made me drool. I broke her wings before they were fully formed and stood on one of them to keep her in place. She screamed as I sent more sizzling voltage through her, sending her into unconsciousness.

She changed back into a human while I watched. I flipped her onto her back with a wave of my hand and sliced open her skull. I couldn’t wait to see how her brain managed all of that. “This is going to be better than going to Disneyland.”
